Gramsci, The State and Adult Education

This presentation, drawing on original sources, provides an overview of and a discussion on those writings and ideas, in Antonio Gramsci’s huge corpus of work, that are relevant to the education of adults. Among the topics discussed are those of adult education and the state,
adult education for industrial democracy, adult education and cultural preparation, adult literacy, prison education, adult education and the Southern Question with specific reference to immigration, and, most important of all, adult education in the context of an intellectual and moral reform.
Peter Mayo is Professor and Head of Department of Education Studies, Faculty of Education, University of Malta. His books include Gramsci, Freire and Adult Education (Zed Books, 1999) which was also published in five other languages (Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, Italian and German), Liberating Praxis (Praeger, 2004, Sense, 2008) which won a 2005 AESA award, Gramsci and Education (co-edited, Rowman & Littlefield, 2002), Learning and Social Difference (co-authored with C. Borg, Paradigm, 2006), Education in Small States (edited, Routledge, 2009), Public Intellectuals, Radical Democracy and Social Movements. A book of Interviews (with C. Borg, Peter Lang Publ., 2007), and Gramsci and Educational Thought (edited Wiley-Blackwell, 2010). He co-edits the book series, Postcolonial Studies in Education for Palgrave-Macmillan and the book series, International issues in Adult Education for Sense Publishers.
